My brain, it's not working. Help.

This morning I drove to work in silence. I don't think I've ever driven myself anywhere in silence. I am so completely and totally out there in La-La land. So today, I'll rant about something simple. The whole "He/She is trying SO hard to be emo/goth/punk/industrial/altmusicbullshit. I mean, it's like, so totally pathetic." thing.

I'll make this short.

Who decides which people within said genres are 'authentic' and which are 'trying so hard'? Is there some sort of screening process?

Is there anyone out there who really wants to be labeled 'emo'? Why is that word suddenly used to describe every single type of music/song that involves a slow beat/piano/whiney singer etc. etc.?

Has anyone anyone ever thought "Gee, that guy/girl is truly an authentic Goth kid. Lets shower them with praise and Living Dead Dolls!"?

Why do people get so uncomfortable as soon as genres start to mix and things aren't as easily classified?

Is there at least one other person on the planet who admits to listening to widely known bands without shame?

If the bands you listen to are so great, how come no one has ever heard of them? Are you sure you didn't make them up?

If something is popular, why is it automatically labeled as crap?

If something is elite and trendy, why is it automatically good? Is anyone actually listening? Are you all zombies?

Why is it so horrible that I admit to listening to music just because it's catchy and cute and I don't have to think while I listen to it? Hmm?

Is this post more ignorant than what I'm complaining about in the first place?

Why, if I hate music elitism, am I in love with John Cusack's character in High Fidelity? Is it because I'm obsessed with Lloyd Dobler?

Ok this little survey thing came out interestingly. I didn't even cheat once! So freaking weird.

Pete - Ashley - OK this is effing weird as all hell. I made Peter a CD a long time ago, and when he saved the songs to his computer he didn't know the bands or songs so he just gave them various titles. I then lost some music on my computer and stole the songs back from his. They were still titled with the titles he gave them. I then put them on my iPod, and they all have the band and song names that Pete gave them. This particular song? He titled it Pete with the artist as Ashley. ?? I know you all think I'm full of shit, but I swear to you, this is what popped up for this question. I KNOW!

Blue Light - Mazzy Star. I don't even want to comment on how god damned weird that response is. Not only have I stated to everyone I know that I want that song played at my funeral, but my friend just passed away and this song played as I went up to view the casket. The friend who passed was the person who got me into Mazzy Star. Weird string of coincidences that I honestly don't think are just coincidences.

What is my day going to be like?

3. I Won't Make You - Something Corporate - Ok so I know, cheesey emo pop whatever but their lyrics are SO GOOD. And I can't resist a whiney voice coupled with piano. I just can't. So the dude who does this band and Jack's Mannequin rules. His lyrics = pure awesomeness.

4. Such Great Heights - The Postal Service - I made Pete listen to this on one of the first days I met him. It was only after he left that I realized it was sort of appropriate.

5. Breathing By Wires - The Juliana Theory - Sex. That is what I think of when I hear Brett's voice. I'm so sad that they broke up. Boo!

20. Cherry Kiss - From Autumn To Ashes - Guitar part in the beginning of this song gives me chills. That's where the enjoyment stops.
